Fox wins by keeping a loyal audience engaged by manufacturing outrage. MSNBC loses because they put out a bad and obviously biased product.
It's also hard to buy the independent results because pissed off with the GOP super conservative =/= middle. In today's climate, it's a fair bet a disproportionate amount of "independents" skew conservative. A left to right scale would have been a clearer comparison.

As usual, an astute observation from my pedobear friend.
Ask me point blank "hey which party are you in and which news channel do you watch." my on paper answer is "independent and fox news," when the answer in actuality is "i'm an extremely conservative person who lines up with the Republican platform 60-70% of the time, but am disgusted enough with the 30-40% other stuff to not call myself a republican and i think all the cable news networks suck, but Fox news gives me the most tolerable news source due to my personal preferences. I can't stomach any of MSNBC or commentary beyond the news itself from CNN"
i could be stretching, but i would wager that it's not far off from the results.
