So if I walk up to someone in a bar and punch him square in the face, do I deserve to be shot dead in retaliation? I just intentionally tried to injure, right?

Yep. If that person feels like you are threatening their life, they should be able to retaliate how they deem fit.

A others have stated the law says that if the person you just punched in the face feels his life is threatened, then yes he has the right to shoot you. If you don't like that, don't walk up to someone and punch them in the face.

Absolutely, and the law is on their side.
In something like 38 (maybe more) states, you have no duty to retreat. If you walk up and seriously assault (which a punch to the face is) an armed person unprovoked, whether you live or die in the next few minutes depends entirely on how much of a threat they perceive you to be and how proficient they are with their weapon.
