SDS, sorry.
I get that when your salary gets into several million a year that 200k isn't a big deal, and Gus probably cashes in on incentives unlike Bert. But how in the actual frick?

We make up for it with our staff salaries.
Gus seems to have made it clear that he will make sacrifices if it means getting the best around him. He hasn't seemed particularly interested in leveraging his success for personal raises and instead transferred that to assistants to attract the best

good...between this and cam it proves we're not completely foolish with money (at least for cost to production).

Alex Byington disagrees

@AUBlog: That being said, Malzahn does have a $250K yearly escalator written into his contract that will have him making $4.35 million in 2016.

@AUBlog: Ok, I misspoke earlier, apologies. Bielema set to make $4 mill in 2015, avg. salary is $4.25 mill. RT @RazorbackFB: LINK

Gus has always cared more about contract length. In '13, before the SEC championship game there were rumors flying about job offers for Gus and if he got his agent and lawyers involved they probably could have got way more annually than he's receiving now. Gus worked contract length instead.
Anyhow, he's got a ton of incentives:

$125,000 for 12 wins; $150,000 for 13 wins; $200,000 for 14 wins. Malzahn can only receive one win-related bonus in a season
$100,000 for playing in the SEC Championship Game;
$150,000 for winning the SEC Championship.
$100,000 for playing in a BCS bowl game next year or a college football semifinal game beginning in 2014;

Jeff Long is a moron. Water is wet.

I believe part of Bielema's number is his Wisconsin buyout. I could be wrong though.
Regardless, we should be paying Gus more and not counting on his good nature to keep him around.

I like Gus and I think he's our guy but I'm not (as a hypothetical AD) giving him a blank check until he shows me consistency. '13 was a bloated year in terms of wins, but I wasn't exactly impressed with last year's performance down the stretch.

I have no problem giving Gus a blank check to make infrastructure upgrades in terms of administration, operations, facilities and other things like that. Those things will be beneficial to the program regardless of who is coaching.
I'm with Jones though, Gus is being paid as one of the top but he still is a 3rd year coach who struggled at times. Once he consistently is putting us in the mix as a contender and 10+ wins he will be rewarded. Not worth risking more right now a la Chizik
