Current Direction of the NCAA: You happy, or not?

I think the NCAA's position and stature has changed DRAMATICALLY in the past 20 years, and even the past 10 years. The past 3 years we have witnessed a NEW NCAA, one that doesn't use the previous broad powers of taking away scholarships or the death penalty for grievances that would have been considered atrocities in the past.
In the past 3 years:
Penn St had a coach rape kids and the administration covered it up. They had a brief post season ban, lost some scholarships, but now all is well in Happy Valley.
UNC had 3,100 students (over 1,000 were NCAA athletes) take fake classes and get fake degrees from school, so they could remain academically eligible to play. They lost won football post season and 9 scholarships, but now all is well in Chapel Hill. The NCAA and SACS (accreditation institution) have basically said, "There's nothing we can do."
Then look at the shear volume of schools who report Secondary Violations in recruiting. We all do it, SC gave some recruits cupcakes WITH icing...the icing was a violation, but we DGAF, we ice our cupcakes down here and the NCAA can DWI.
HOWEVER, this begs the questions: "Are you happy with the absent overlord the NCAA has become? Does the lack of oversight and real consequence actually benefit how your school "does business?"
There are so many people complaining about the lack of NCAA oversight/effectiveness, I've been one of them in the past. Now though, I think that I could get on board with the times. I think the NCAA is sending a clear message "we exist b/c the participating schools allow it, each school/athletic department should run however they see fit." To me, that sounds like freedom, that sounds like 'Merica!

There's no need for them to exist in that case, so I'm still a 'not'. And it doesn't sound like 'merica to me, it sounds like some 3rd world country full of chaos.

I think the best parts of 'Merica are the ones with the least gov't/institutional oversight. That's why I'm getting on board with liking the new NCAA. It's a return to the Wild West. The strong will dominate, the weak will perish. 'Merica.

I prefer the new NCAA to the old, but I still think the rules are too strict. Players should be able to profit off of their name.

The NCAA screwed up by not allowing players to use their own likeness for financial gain. If they allowed that, you wouldn't have any of this BS happening.
If it were any other student at the University, they would be applauded as a innovator or entrepreneur.
Not a fan of players getting paid, but definitely think they should be able to make their own money

Yeah, it is a tough situation. I do not think the NCAA should be able to capitalize on an individuals image or likeness while the athlete cannot.
On the other hand, if you complain about schools buying players now, just imagine all the ways boosters could abuse it if players could make money off their name.

I don't complain about it. I have no problem with boosters buying players.

Right now, this is the only thing that I think the NCAA will enforce, also they won't allow players to sign autographs for money (Gurley.) Those seem to be the only two things they're focusing on.
It's sad that the 2 things they focus on could be the things that help the players the most IRL.
Hopefully, soon, we'll just open college athletics up to the free market and we can all contract players out of HS.

I wouldn't say it's going away, I just think they're going to reclassify their justification for existence. It will be more of an official trophy presenter type of thing than a governing/enforcement institution.

The NCAA's job parallels the effort to solve the hostilities in the middle east...just without all the killing..so far. 
On another note, I think the SEC (B'ham office) is doing a fabulous job handling the affairs of the conference.

I think the ncaa needs to be cleaned up. That starts with ncaa organization.
I do not think that players should be allowed more or less than a student. It's what they are.
I think the ncaa should be able to profit and should use that to enforce the rules. I do believe that a portion should be set aside for all players and they get that based on years completed. 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%.
So no... I dont like the direction.

Agree with your point. The ncaa should have suspended winston until the university decided to actually have their meeting.
And I actually believe there should be a strike rule in place. If you get arrested 3 times while you are on a team. You lose a year of eligibility.

Students are allowed to earn money. Athletes aren't.
