Good question and, as things stand right now, I'm not so sure either. Currently, I'd say you need a great offense and a "good enough" defense to win championships...
In the past few years, the spread/HUNH offense has changed things. It was built to better compete against more physical/dominating defenses and I'd say the spread has the upper hand right now. I think it'll take some innovation on the defensive side of the ball, something we haven't seen in quite a while, to even things out. Just as defenses evolved to counter the glut of option offenses that came about in the late 60's/70's, eventually there'll be an answer to the spread/HUNH as well...but how long that will take is anyone's guess...
