Told LSU to frick off? We all know it wasnt over money.
Was he tired of not getting the respect he deserved when he was the best coach on staff?

"I went to the better overall program" - John Chavis, A&M DC

Hes aging out on the tail end of a successful career and needed some more green. And since Sumlin doesn't drug test I mean that in two senses of the word.
And he wanted to try things out with a functional offense, can't blame him there

maybe going to Texas A&M is Chavis' way of coming out of the closet?

Well "they gave me a lot more money" doesn't really inspire your players.

Money

Terms of contract.
Next AD will be hired under the same terms as Chavis, most likely. It looks to be Clancy Pendergast

Maybe Chavis was tired of LSU's small defense getting pushed around and run over.

What do you consider alot? I thought he got like 300k more? Not that much in his profession in todays climate.

when the highest paid DC is making 1.8 million. 400k is still a ton of money.

Over a million dollars during the term of his contract.

All LSU, all the time

Money was a factor, but the term of the contract was the primary reason. Most assistant coaches have only a one year contract, but top coordinators often get a two year deal so that they've got a year's pay waiting if the head coach gets canned. Means that they don't have to take the first job that comes along.
LSU wasn't willing to give Chavis any guarantee beyond one year--their proposal said it was for three years, but had an out if Miles was no longer head coach. That's not consistent with the market, so Chavis took the money, and the guarantee (3 years, even more than the 2 big time coordinators get) that A&M was offering.

Is he a ex military guy? Maybe the military culture of Texas AM appears to him. I think AM is a lot better university too. More intellectuals go there. LSU seems like a 4 year party school.

He wasn't a Michigan man and didn't feel wanted for that fact.
