It was a good hire - AU terminated their DC, and got the best one on the market.
That said, I will wait and see what comes of it. EJ was a good DC, but did poorly at AU. It's possible that the same will happen with Boom, or they may turn around and have a stout defense just as Alabama is bringing in stout offenses.
As it stands, I'm curious to see how well he does at AU with Gus as HC. I'm really curious to see how top recruits that play both sides (like Kerryon Johnson) will end up playing. Even though he's a really good safety, will Gus insist on him playing RB despite a very solid RB corps? Looking at the commits currently slated to sign with AU, there's a decent batch of OLBs and potential Safeties, but a serious drop off after that.
I think Boom's hire will help swing some tight races for defensive players (Holland, Walker) towards AU unless they had developed relationships with EJ. Auburn's got room for some more commitments, but with so many early declarations, time may be running out. Boom's not going to have much to work with next year on the defensive side (though honestly he should - AU signed a fairly stout defensive class last year, especially in the secondary, and a highly rated one in 2013). Of course, our Auburn fans would have to let us know how many are currently enrolled.
Muschamp was the smart hire. Is it something the rest of the SEC needs to fear? No idea. No one was thinking people should be worried about hiring Kiffin, and he's brought added elements to Alabama's offense. The team doing the hiring will always trumpet the hiring as something to worry about, and the other teams will wave it off. The correct answer is, of course, "we'll see."

EJ was a good DC,
This is not what I heard from a lot of bama fans when he was hired

Saying Boom won't have much to work with next year is wrong.
We will have the best front 7 we have had since 2010 when we led the league in rush defense.
Our secondary is questionable, but our front 7 won't be.
Now in 2015 our dline is in serious trouble if we don't add to it this recruiting cycle.

EJ was a mediocre coordinator at best if you look @ stats. If you consider 40-60 ranking defense every year except 1 then I guess he's "good".
