I'm definitely beginning to think that Foster may be the 2nd best option behind Boom.

Foster has never had athletes like he'd have here. WRECKING MFIN CREW

all of this is true, but I do believe Venables would be able to enhance defensive recruiting and lock down top prospects almost as good as Sumlin can.
Bottom line we'd always have the talent with him at the helm.

I can agree with that, but if we're talking pure coaching up talent. Brent is a 6 or 7 while Foster is a 9.9. Snyder is a .03.

FWIW, my uncle that is really tied in to the Oklahoma program(two time all-American under Switzer during the back to back nattys in the 70s) thought he was a really high character guy.

You look at more sophisticated stats that attempt to measure the quality of a defense by considering quality of opponent faced, filtering out garbage drives, etc, and Venables comes out looking great nearly every time. For example, the 2010 season at OU, his Defensive Fremeau Efficiency Index is 4th highest in the nation. His first year at Clemson is the only year his DFEI is outside the top 20.
Considering all the factors, Venables is probably my first choice. He's a very good to great Xs and Os guy, and an even better recruiter. And the latter might mean more than we expect if we were to lose David Beatty as some rumors suggest might be a possibility.

Who would we lose Beatty to?

Beatty wants to be a HC. He's not even an OC here. Another school could offer him either position, and he'd be a threat to go.

Especially if Spav leaves for a HC job I could see Beatty being his OC.

Tulsa doesn't pay. He'd be taking a pay cut to be an OC at Tulsa. IMO that is a step down. He should however apply for the OC job with Sumlin if that happens. Not sure he's my pick, but I do not want to lose him off this staff.

This article does some pretty weird cherry-picking. Like, no shite you're going to give up a lot of rushing yards to UGA and GT, one is a triple option team, the other has Todd Gurley.
Also the GT loss wasn't on Venables, Clemson's D held them to four field goals and lost because of pick sixes. Really the only stinker of a performance on their resume this year is Georgia.
