Plenty of other teams can fill up that stadium. Try again

Not 6 or 7 weekends a fall.
It's one thing for fans from somewhere out of the area to say "Hey! Cool... we got a bowl game! Awesome, it's in the south! It'll be warm!... wait... why are we driving through the ghetto? Oh... shite... that's the stadium we're playing in today?"

Like what teams? I don't see Bama or Auburn playing there anytime soon. There's a reason that the Super 6 was moved out of Legion Field, people didn't want to go there. I'll give you the Magic City Classic but that's literally the super bowl of HBCs and that demographic is a little more comfortable and welcome at legion field than most.

No CUSA,MAC,or Sun belt team would. hell some SEC,Big 12 schools wouldn't.

I've been in [Movie Gallery ]Memorial Stadium for Troy games. They have a nice niche there in the Wiregrass. You're crazy if you think UAB in the center of Bama/Auburn country is anything like that. Can we please be real? The UAB program is not popular or well followed

I've also been in a sold out Legion Field for Bama v. MTSU, maybe 10 years ago

Let's also be real: Alabama wants no part of a succesful D1 program 55 miles from its campus.

Then why did thy subsidize them for 30 years despite no support?

Alabama had a contract to play games at Legion field as recently as 2008... but, the contract was broken before the games were played because of the fact that much of the stadium is structurally unsound... but, yeah, UAB was supposed to fill it up or get shut down.

yeah and what they paid for, in this case, was a 16 page report

Basically, it doesn't take into account the value of national exposure, branding, effects on enrollment, generating long-term alumni support, etc. etc.
On top of all that, it's making the recommendation to cut football based on the assumption that UAB would build a few buildings. Doesn't mention the fact those buildings were going to be paid for by boosters.
NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT THEY AREN'T REDUCING SPENDING.

The biggest kicker is how Carr Consulting came up with the future projections for capital improvements - the UAB coaches.
Carr Consulting went to each UAB coach and asked them what they needed to succeed in the future. Obviously, each coach gave their dream list, unwittingly knowing that it was going to be used against them in the future.

Such bullshite backfilling and excuses to justify what they wanted to happen. It's bad for Birmingham and bad for UAB as an independent institution. Very frustrating the lack of accountability and recourse that are available for some non-profits, universities, etc.
AU folks were through with Lowder more than a couple years before the university was through with him. The state senate went to put him back on (over the votes of the Alumni), but enough hell was raised that it was stopped.

If anyone is actually interested in what happended with UAB
quote:
"Our undergraduates have different backgrounds," he said. "This is an urban campus with a vibrant undergraduate community. Attendance at football games has not been a major part of their activities."
I mean, sorry that your typical 18-20 yr old college student doesn't want to travel across town to the ghetto and risk their car getting broken into. The only other reason to go to that part of town besides Legion Field is to buy heroin in the projects across the street.
Stupid fricking post is stupid fricking post. I was gonna post (again) all the photos of 67,000 people showing up for this year's Magic City Classic, along with countless numbers of massive numbers of fans tailgating, but I'm tired of it. Do your own homework if you want to avoid looking like a fool.
I was also going to search on AL.com for the articles about all the killings and rapes and car break-ins that occurred that day, but I got lazy. Feel free to do that yourself also.

More fricking bullshite, but why am I not surprised? AA&M and ASU fill it up every year.

Third paragraph above: "This is not about financial woes," Watts said. "This is about planning for excellence in the future in everything we do."
Sixth paragraph above: "Watts said that 'killing football was not what we set out to do' but the more they analyzed, the clearer the situation became. Football just was not sustainable."
Talking out of both ends. Like I said: A lying sack of sheet.
Then he cancels press conference as as not to have to answer any questions about this bullshite.

This is exactly why I'm pissed about this.
I didn't want to be transferred to this backwater state... but at least I got transferred to the one major city in it.
Now, these Bammer retards are hell bent on killing the one institution that makes Birmingham a livable city. Without UAB, Birmingham would be Montgomery with a bigger crime problem... there would be no banks here. There would be no lingering remnants of the steel and manufacturing industry.
