1984, 1990, 2001, and 2002 have been the only real upsets in the past 35 years. Don't care about what the betting line is. The 4 I mentioned are the only ones in 35 years when the team that was definitely better lost.

Agree, though while I think last year in hindsight the teams were pretty close it was definitely an upset for Auburn to win at the time in the eyes of everyone. They were a pretty heavy underdog (both in Vegas and amongst both fanbases).

2001 and 2002 were incredibly wacky.

I know, that is why I threw out the disclaimer about rankings and the betting line.

1984 - AU was much better, but missed about 50 field goals. Dye called it the worst coaching performance of his career.

1990 - Stallings pulled off a great coaching job and AU played not to lose. It really ignited the Stallings era. Bama was not a good team in 1990, AU was.

2001 - AU was a bit better, but got blown the frick out by a motivated bama. Most shocking IB in 35 years IMO.

2002 - Exactly opposite of 2001, bama was a lot better, but didn't give a shite at that point.

BTW, if AU was to win this year I would not view it as, as much of an upset as the 4 mentioned. AU is a good team this year. In the 4 I mentioned a team that was not really very good beat a good team. This year both teams are pretty good.
