Positives I took from Saturday vs. Auburn

1. Kyle Allen is pretty good - very accurate and has a cannon for an arm. I like that Kyle is willing to take risks (even if they are often dumb choices). A quarterback in our offense is going to make mistakes, but having one that is willing to let our receivers go up for a jump ball isn't necessarily a bad thing. Now, if he can just improve on when he decides he needs to take a risk, we should be fine.
2. I really like the look of our "new" offense. The run game especially. The way our running backs looked Saturday is how I expected us to look all season long - very physical, dominant, fast through the gaps, and no turnovers. Not only that, but we have slowed down the no huddle offense to accommodate Kyle's lack of experience. I am particularly impressed with Sumlin's ability to change so quickly to accommodate and build a team around the talent that we have on the field. We ran the most balanced game I have seen since Sumlin has been our coach, and I want to continue to see that. I also like the new "fullback" set we have been running that is also a 3WR set. We can really navigate the run game and set up the play action pass out of that formation.
3. Love that we are starting so many freshmen on defense. Alaka is a recent standout that has impressed on several plays, while making a few mistakes on others. The defense played with a lot of fire and that is a change in a positive direction.
4. Myles Garrett is as good as Clowney ever was as a freshman, and isn't the team-killing child that Clowney was in his later years. I knew he would be good, but I never could have imagined what an unstoppable force he would be from day one. The way he was playing Saturday, he looked like a seasoned senior about to enter the draft in a few months.
Bottom line, I think our offense is headed in the right direction. If we can eventually speed it up with Kyle at the helm, but still have run-heavy formations that allow us to be as versatile as possible, that would be great.

And of course a win vs. a top 5 team on the road is always a positive, but lets be honest this team is like Jekyll and Hyde these days on both sides of the ball. That is because (in my opinion) we have lacked an identity and lacked leaders on offense.
If we can improve steadily, we should be back on track with our expectations in 2015 and salvage a pretty quality finish to the 2014 season.

Agreed with everything
I have a positive outlook when it comes to our front seven. Hilliard back next year, combined with gained experience from Washington, Alaka and Walker will be big.

Not to be a negative nancy, but it might be my job.
Kyle has yet to play a game without an INT. That includes Auburn (terrible pass D), SMU, Lamar, ULM.
Keep in mind this was Auburn, who has a horrible defense. The OL definitely played better this game, I think the loss of Ifedi last game was HUGE. Took a week for them to gel a bit better. I'd say it was the OL, not the RBs that showed the real improvement. Hope we don't lose anyone else the last two games. We were also using 6-7 blockers on a lot of pass plays, can't do that against MU or LSU and expect them to be open.
Agree.
Garrett isn't staying longer than he absolutely is required too. Isn't it 2 years now?

And? ~300 yards 4 TDs and 1 INT is a stat line I will take all day every day.

lacked leaders on offense
Agree. And we've lacked leaders on defense for 2 years now. The biggest problem we have on that side of the ball imo is that all our best players are freshmen. It's hard to lead as freshmen. People don't follow marginal players or guys that make mental mistakes. Such a guy doesn't have the gravitas.
It's a natural order on any sports team that the players listen to the best players. What you hope is that those guys are leaders because people are going to follow them regardless. But it's hard for freshmen to get in an older guys face and it's hard for older guys to take freshmen seriously (besides freaks like Myles).
The thing I'm most excited about this fish class is it is chock full of hard working, high character guys with loads of talent. Garrett, Johnson, Cunningham, Alaka, Walker, Watts, Wilson. It won't surprise me if any of these guys emerge next year as the guy everyone turns to to lead this defense. I think it will be Obioha and Zo Williams mostly but some of these young bucks are going to start casting shadows too.

Auburn, who has a horrible defense
while I know that is the meme, they really don't.
They've played worse recently but to call it horrible is not really fair. Despite an incredibly difficult schedule and playing at one of the fastest tempos, they are actually 60th (middle of the pack) in Yards per Game and 47th (slightly above average) in Points against. Even after our game, Auburn has a defensive FEI rating of 27th by Football Outsiders (which takes into account the pace of their play)

Basically agree with everything you said. The RBs looked great. Trey looked pissed and I liked that a lot
The other things I took away from this game...
1. Very obvious that Sumlin has not "LOST" the locker room.
2. The Bama game did not undo everything that has been accomplished since we joined the SEC.
How idiotic do these statements seem now????
Gigem.

The Bama game
If that game helped lead us to finding the correct QB, and more importantly, leader for our team, I will look back on that game as a positive.

Not only that, but his interception in the first half was one where he got trigger happy and underestimated the defender and overestimated the receiver. Easily correctable as time passes by.

Checked that other site yesterday, and walked right out as soon as I saw something along the lines of...
"See what happens when you wear maroon and white"
I could care less if we wear pink panties as uniforms, just as long as we win. But to blame our lackluster effort on special edition uniforms and our win on traditional uniforms is about as dumb as you can get
(Come at me finestfirst! )

He does this and we finish 9-3

I just don't think you will find many coaches that can transition to a different offense that includes a very different philosophy and different packages (that still maintains the same overall philosophy as the previous offense). Sumlin has really shown a willingness to do what it takes to win.
I remember under all of the past 3 coaches (Sherman, Fran, and Slocum) there being points similar to after the Bama loss this year where it was obvious to the fan base that there were major problems and all of those coaches basically applied the weather the storm approach rather than dissecting the problem to see if there was something that could be changed to fix it.

I agree and I like the sets and balance of what we ran Saturday a lot. That was how I expected our offense to look before the year honestly

Has Ifedi just not been playing well...thats how it feels to me. OL played pretty great with him out of the lineup.

Hey I'm not saying he didn't play well. All I'm doing is trying to say we didn't look like world beaters. 3 fumbles our way and we still almost lost.
The lack of any touchdowns in the second half was worrisome. It made me think auburn game planned for the offense we ran vs ULM, and once they woke up, we struggled.
There were a lot of positives for next year, and I'm excited to see this team with a year of experience. I just don't see us beating LSU, and I give us 50-50 vs mizzou.
8-5 w/ the bowl game. Which is ok.

I think we only had 5 possessions (not counting kneel down to finish) in the second half, 2 made it inside the 10 yard line and another made it into FG range. So 60% of our drives in the second half got us into scoring position. I would have liked to have gotten into the end zone as well which we would have had Reynolds made a very catchable pass.
Our second to last posession started at the 2 yard line and we wanted to burn clock, not exactly ideal to running our main offense.
Imagine if we had a defense and we got 6 or 7 posessions in the 2nd half. We win that game easily.
