quote:The argument I see against the escrow account is that it doesn't address the issue of players getting paid today for the work they are putting in today and the money they are making the university today. The players will just continue to complain about how they work their tails off and can't afford crab legs so they have to steal them. They'll also probably say something to the effect of how working stiffs like you and me get paid weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly for the work we do, rather than getting a paycheck in 3 or 4 years.
Why can't they decide on a royalty amount and put it in an escrow account? Let's make up a number and say it's 1% Put names on the jersey, like previously mentioned. Every "#3 Gurley II" that sells, $8.50 goes into the escrow account, payable to the student upon graduation or exhaustion of eligibility. If they leave early for the draft, then they forfeit those royalties and it goes into Hartman. The players that make the league are already forestalling financial compensation until they go pro. This would give them an incentive to complete their education and play for 4 full years.
Do the same with autographed memorabilia and digital rights/depictions.
For the record, I'm still against paying players, but if there is going to be some sort of monetary compensation awarded, it needs to deal with whatever problem (real or perceived) the players say they have.

If schools do pay players, what do yall think about the move toward 4 year guaranteed scholarships? Because I do think that if schools are paying players, it will be treated more like a job and programs would have more of an incentive to do a better job of managing their rosters when it comes to players who don't have a realistic chance of contributing.
Just curious because that's one side I never see brought up (and I'm not using it to say that players shouldn't be paid, just interested in how it would be handled).
