History

No offense, but that is not an answer. In fact, in most cases teams have a lot of "history" with their primary rival yet don't sideways root for them like Bama fans do with Tenn.

Unless you were saying that Bama fans respect history more than your average fan, so the fact that Tenn was once mighty carries weight with them and that is why they are always defending Tenn- they want others to respect that history. That is kinda of an answer, but it seems a fan of a program like Bama would be the first to endorse some sort of survival of the fittest.

Bingo! You see, my friend, you can't refer to SEC football history without starting with the Alabama program. Since 1926 when Alabama made southern football relevant on a national level with their Rose Bowl victory, throughout the years with all the national championships, famous players/coaches and the dominant role in the SEC (23 championships out of 92 total), Alabama fans, above all others, cherish the history of the conference. Tennessee was always our big rival (along with Ga. Tech before we ran them out of the league), and we remember the classic contests that we've had over the years...Tennessee is second to us in SEC championships with 13, and has the second most wins so it's natural for us to respect, and even wish that they would become an eastern contender again so that it would again be fun to....kick their asses.
