The political economics of college athletics

This is a compelling article about the oligarchy of the NCAA. It made nearly 1B USD last year 84% of which came from March Madness. (That actually surprised me). While I am a fan of college athletics, I think the time that the money made from it be distributed to the athletes who make it possible is long over due.

Well worth the read.

Hell will literally freeze over long before the U.S. Department of Education ever allows this to happen.

So only men's basketball players should be paid?

Something I have always wondered ....
CFB total attendance vs CBB total attendance?
I mean ... if it might show anything.
TV is a mighty powerful thing.

Absolutely Agree.
It needs to come in the form of several things:
1. An absolute guarantee of a complete education, including tuition, books, room and board - regardless if they become hurt or injured and can no long play.
2. Medical care for the rest of their life for injuries received on the playing field, during training, practice or in actual participation of their sport, regardless whether they can continue to play the sport or not as a result of the injury.
3. Some type of monthly stipend while they are actively involved with a team representing a school.

March Madness is pretty much the only thing that the NCAA controls.
Also, the money gets redistributed to pay for athletic expenses for schools.

Most athletic departments aren't making much if any money, especially if you take away state subsidies. These programs would have to raise tuition or cut other sports to pay the players. Its not just the small schools either. link I see UT, UGA and AU all losing money if you take away the subsidies.

It would be nice to know how much of that is actual profit for the NCAA, though. This is a typical news story -- they have the hook (almost one billion dollars! WOW!) but it feels dishonest because they don't give us all the information. It could just be lazy journalism, but until they do give us all the information, we're not morally wrong in assuming it's possible that they're hiding mitigating factors.

It is distributed to them in the form of scholarships, books, food, housing etc.

I'd think not being $100,000 in debt from college is good enough payment for the athletes.

The NCAA don't need to distribute a penny to any athlete; all they have to do is turn a blind eye to the boosters; problem solved.
