I say I'm "grilling out" not "barbecuing." If I have to use a noun, I guess I say having a "cookout," but certainly not a "barbecue." Even when I'm literally making barbecue, I tell people to come over because I'm "smoking some pork." If you use the word barbecue, and I show up to no smoked pork, we are not friends anymore. I would be hugely disappointed.

True. Cookout is pretty prevalent. But if I hear "backyard barbecue" I often think of burgers and hot dogs as much, if not more, than I think of actual barbecue. I think it's because real barbecue takes time and I think of a barbecue in this sense as just cooking out and having fun with friends/family.

I agree with this. BBQ is not simple grilling. We just say we've got chicken or steak or burgers on the grill. OR fajitas.

"We're grilling some steaks"
