Nope, called grilling or smoking. The sauce or the rub make it BBQ. If you put chicken on a grill with no sauce, it's just grilled chicken.
If you put a ham in the smoker, that's not BBQ
I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

In some regions yes. But I think that in most of the South you will find the term grill used more.
But how often do you hear "Hey, CSA, wanna come over this Saturday for a grill?" or "I'm having a grill for the game this weekend."? Even when the plans are just burgers (etc.) it's often called a barbecue when cooking outdoors.

I say I'm "grilling out" not "barbecuing." If I have to use a noun, I guess I say having a "cookout," but certainly not a "barbecue." Even when I'm literally making barbecue, I tell people to come over because I'm "smoking some pork." If you use the word barbecue, and I show up to no smoked pork, we are not friends anymore. I would be hugely disappointed.

around here it more likely
1. we're having a cook-out
2. we're gonna be grilling
3. we're having a boil
4. when they say, come over for a barbeque, they mean we are eating actual BBQ.
However I will say, Kudos to South Carolina for Shrimp & Grits, love that!
