Updyke is not right in the head. But one thing that needs to be pointed out was the jersey on the Bear statue that set him off.

Granted that is a harmless prank in reality, but it was enough to cause a man with very questionable mental stability to feel like he needed to seek vengeance.

There have been several instances of jerseys on statues, and the IB score branded into the grass.
Does this compare to the tree killings? No, but the Barn and Corndog fans are not without sin so to speak.

I agree, the person that placed the jersey on the statue/ deformed grass temporarily carries some fault. But how is anyone to know a rivalry can't have boundaries at that point? Sure, we can't predict human action, but we can usually assume it will be close to equal in retaliation.

At the end of the day, students should be able to jab at students at a rival in-state school without fear of retired cops going postal on their traditions. If he is so mentally ill, it's amazing he made it so long as a cop.
