I'll be in Dallas next week for first time ever yay.
I've never been so have no clue about safe areas vs sketchy ones.
Looking for something in the 3 star range because I'm a poor.

Any suggestions about areas to look-at/avoid? Or even specific hotels?
Trying to stay as close to downtown as possible

Downtown and areas to the south and east are pretty ghetto. I'd venture a little bit north in the SMU area and commute south if you have to be downtown. Arlington, to the west, has some pretty cool shite to do, and isn't too bad of an area. Lots of lodging on I-30 of all caliber near the 6 flags area.

Thought about AirBNB? Worked great for me when I visited Boston earlier this year.

I always used to find great deals at a place called NYLO in las colinas. Very modern, loft style rooms. Turns into a club at night. Expensive bar, but I seriously paid like $59 a night both time I went. Not sure how I kept getting great deals.

yeah if you're talking the city just don't go south, too far east, and sw of downtown.

Your best bet is to try and find anything along 75 between Henderson and 635.

If I got something near SMU, how's public transit to downtown?

Near SMU would be ideal. Uptown is nice as shite.
