Well the Birmingham metro area passed the Buffalo, NY metro area in population a few years so technically it's large enough to have a pro franchise. In fact, Birmingham was one of only a handful of cities without a pro franchise that could support a pro franchise in 3 of the 4 major pro sports. MLB was the only one they couldn't support. Other cities in that group were Louisville, Norfolk, Austin, Richmond, and Providence.
