This I will never understand. I got stuck having to run into Walmart a few days before Christmas a couple of years ago. Had to be one of their busier days of the year and I counted 7 registers not open, while every checkout line was at least 5 or 6 customers deep. Made no sense.

Completely agree.

They're no more responsible for the demise of mom-and-pop than any other big box but in terms of general operations they made a big turn in the wrong direction a few years ago. When they first opened, I loved the place. They emphasized American made stuff and had signs posted at the checkouts that said 'If there are more than 3 people in line, we will open another register'. It was a great place to shop.

Now I'm pretty sure the policy is that if there are less than 3 in each line, they think they've got too many people on duty and somebody has to clock out and go home. I still shop there, but it is never a pleasant experience.

In my mind, I associate it with Sam Walton dying but it was a few years afterwards when they really turned for the worst.

Gotta run with the lowest labor costs possible. What you save in price you lose in the experience. It's why those who can afford to are shopping other places.

Sam Walton was alive and in charge then. He was 'good folks'.
