I tried this with WVU, but nobody seems to want to discuss a team that wasn't bowl eligible last year
Let's try this again. What are your thoughts for this coming season? Which games do you see as being potential trap games? What do you think our record will be? Who will be the breakout players? Liabilities?
Some food for fodder:
-Pete Roussel from coachingsearch.com left Bama out of the four team playoffs. He thinks it will be FSU, Clemson, Auburn, and UCLA with Clemson winning it all.
Athlon predicts we will be #1 in the west.

Early West Division Predictions for 2014
1. Alabama
Flip a coin between Alabama and Auburn for the top spot in the West next year. For now, a slight edge goes to the Crimson Tide, largely due to next year’s matchup being in Tuscaloosa. After losing the final two games of 2013, Nick Saban decided to shake up the coaching staff, and former USC coach Lane Kiffin will call the plays in 2014. Kiffin has to settle on a quarterback, whether that’s Blake Sims, David Cornwell, Cooper Bateman or Alec Morris. And of course, there’s a possibility a transfer could change the outlook of the quarterback battle. While the offense settles on someone under center, the team can lean on a deep stable of running backs. The one-two punch of T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry could be the best in the nation in 2014. As usual, Alabama will be strong on defense. But linebacker C.J. Mosley, safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, linebacker Adrian Hubbard and end Ed Stinson are big losses. If the Crimson Tide is going to get back to the national championship, they have to navigate road dates at LSU and Ole Miss.

Miss State is our trap as usual. We will play like crap unless everything I have heard about this team is gospel. Two teams I see getting a special amount of attention. TN and Auburn. If we make it to the big game we roll like Germany through Poland in 39. The playoff game before that one will be tough though.

Agreed with Miss St. Thankfully we aren't playing in Starkvegas this year.
Tennessee is at the end of a four game stretch before the bye week with three of those games being on the road. I could see us struggling in Knoxville. It's pretty obvious from their spring practice that they are gunning for us.

15-0.
With revenge games against the Barn, USCe, FSU, and shutting up OU in basically their backyard Dallas. /thread.

The WVU mod on 247 predicts that Bama will win the WVU game by a score of 31-17 with a halftime score of 13-7. Thoughts?
Posted on 7/6/14 at 11:28 pm to chattabama
I'll give them 10. 17 is wishful thinking.

Really need Eddie Jackson, Geno Smith, and Tony Brown to step up if we want to be a playoff team. Humph would be nice as well. I think we have to play a more 4-3 type defensive front this year using our Assets at DE to put pressure on the Qb and give our young CBs some help. Not sure if Saban will see it my way.

quote:well considering that we already play 4-3 about 60-70% of the time, i think he will get on board. its not like we werent trying to get to the qb last year, just the guys we had playing the most couldnt get there. we have some serious talent upgrades and depth all along the dline this year, should be fun to watch

its all going to come down to qb. i think if coker has more than 2500 passing yards and fewer then 7 ints, we will be a very very very good team and should be in the playoffs. with what we have everywhere else on this team, that should put us in a great position to win every game. Im intrigued to see if alec morris sticks at punter. hes got to know hes not going to the nfl as a qb at this point, but he showed a pretty good leg in the spring. if he can become a solid and consistent punter who also is a legit passing threat, he could really turn that into a long a lucrative career.

Well duh everyone knows QB is an important position but its not all going to come down to QB. We had a great QB last year. We still have to solve the problems at CB. We still have to be more dominant at the center of our defense against the rush. Kicker is still a question mark. Oline still needs to gel. A lot more question than just QB.

Only in Starkville. Our last three match-ups with them in Bryant-Denny have gone as follows:
2008: 32-7
2010: 30-10
2012: 38-7
They can't touch us in Tuscaloosa.

Looking at 11-2, realistically. Winning the SEC is possible though.

It'll be 31-10 at the half, ends 45-13. That's what I feel right now anyway. Could change.

Definitely. TB will start, I'm sure of it. He has the talent AND he's hungry. Some good things have been thrown around about Jackson, though even if he could start the season, I don't think he'll be 100% until midway through at best. Geno/LC give us good coverage ability on the back end, I just hope Geno is prepared to be a last line of defense if a runner breaks free.

I still maintain that he's the best to come out in some time, but he needs to bulk up. Had he come in early that would have been big.

A'Shawn, Allen, Pettway, and Hand need to be getting after QBs. Rashaan Evans is gonna force his way onto the field, he's too damn good. On third downs, he'll be getting after QBs. Reed needs to play a lot too. I'd like to see Reed over Ivory at the Nose.

I'd love to see a 4-2-5 on some third downs this year. Pettway, Robinson, Allen, Williams from left to right. Ferocious pass rush.

quote:dline is not going ot be a problem. even if ivory is the NT, he is perfectly capable against the run. if we go to a 4-3 front we will likely have reed and robinson in at DT instead. DL is goign to be a huge strength of this team, with robinson, reed, pettway, allen, hand, tomlinson, liner all available. I also dont know why everyone is so down on the CBs. Last year every single one of them who played was in their first year at the position except belue (who was hurt and not really a true #1 guy anyway), and sylve (who was also hurt). We now have a bunch of guys who should make a big leap being comfortable knowing their assignments. DBs make their biggest jump in year 2 usually, so i expect there to be far fewer mental errors, which was the real problem last year. OLine always had to gel, and so will every other OLine that had to replace anyone. We have the bodies to be good this season on the oline. Kicker is a true concern, but hopefully saban has learned the bitter lesson that if you dont have a guy you can rely on at normal field goal ranges its better to just go for it if you are your side of the 50.

just depends on how much saban allows the offense to 'open' up a bit more with the skill players ... the d wasn't horrible last year and outside of the ou qb who had the game of his life, played well enough to win all the games ... the offense was the problem, even in the ou game ...

If or secondary improves like every other secondary had since Saban has arrived and our DL is as good as we think, this team should make a run at the National title. That said we have had high hopes for a great defensive line that puts consistent pressure on the qb and that hasn't happened yet so we will see.if our OL is garbage again we will struggle against teams that can shut down the pass and sit on the run. I just don't think this OL has what it takes to take a game over.

quote:I think we will be pretty good run blocking this year, especially if dom jackson is in the starting 5. Im hoping h3 will bring some meanness back to the mentality. Im hoping the issue last year was not cristobals coaching, cause that dude can recruit miami and id hate to see him go. Im kinda thinking maybe stoutland wasnt as good a fundamentals coach as we thought, just had the stars aligned with an unprecedented amount of talent that would have been great no matter what. I seem to remember the line having to do a bunch of remedial drills last spring, like they didn't know some basic stuff. Seem to remember an al.com video about that. Also seemed to have a lot of misses on the oline recruiting wise during stoutlands time here, cupbard was pretty bare
