First it was Bear Bryant showing his penis envy towards Broyles for being at Arkansas by copying our uni, since Bama doesn't have a mascot that would look good on the side of the helmet, he had numbers placed there.
When did Arkansas put numbers on the side of their helmet, and when did Bryant?
From the picture below, Arkansas doesn't have numbers on their helmets in 1956, (but do in 1957).
As a side note...apparently, LSU had numbers on the side of their helmets in 1957 as well.
Who else has numbers on the side of their helmets in 1957??? Texas A&M...who was their head coach in 1957??? Bear Bryant. Below is a picture of them playing in 1957 against....Arkansas...both teams have numbers on the side of their helmets...the first year that either team did so.
So, Bryant put numbers on the side of the helmets the same year that Broyles did. Then Bryant carried the look over to Alabama.
Many other teams also added numbers to the side of their helmets in 1957...LSU being one. Purdue actually had numbers on the side in 1956. If Arkansas had roman numerals on the side of their helmets, then Alabama added them as well, I would see the direct connection. As it is, Bama was following the trend that many other teams had already set...So the question would be,who was Arkansas copying when they added the numbers.

I'm just damn glad they're not still using those old cleats. They can inflict some serious hurt. I remember a friend having to get his butt stitched up. The worst wounds were left open to heal due to the anaerobic bugs.
