Why not get both? The providers would miss out on the advertising money too.

Because then they would miss out on the catch 22 that live sports prevents cord cutting. By restricting distribution to just cable companies it becomes a benefit for those companies.

Al a carte can always be done later if the cable companies push back.

Its leverage.
