UK - start diverting all resources away from basketball and into football. Still probably won't happen.
UK is currently writing checks to upgrade football and Stoops seems to be making inroads to better recruiting - especially eating into OH. Will be interesting to see how the next 5 years turn out.

Conversely, SEC East teams Tennessee and Kentucky seem to always have some of the toughest every year.

Well, in all honesty Tennessee over-schedules their OoC games IMHO. Not smart. Plus they have Bama as a permanent from the West which really sucks more for Bama right now than it does Tennessee.
Tennessee needs Bama right now more than Bama needs Tennessee and that's just a fact.
Kentucky, I'm not sure how Kentucky could claim a tougher schedule than SCAR or Georgia or Florida in any given year Grits? What's your reasoning behind that if I may ask?

Using the SoS numbers. Not sure I always agree but playing Cards every year as non con and playing MAC schools making bowl games seems to boost it. Also UK seems to get the eventual MNC during the regular season. Bama past year, Auburn with Cam, LSU when they won it all.
Sample article from last season LINK
excerpt
1. KENTUCKY
2012 RECORD OF ALL OPPONENTS: 103-50
First-year coach Mark Stoops faces a tough task in rebuilding the Wildcats, and his initial season comes with a brutal schedule. Kentucky opens against Western Kentucky in Nashville in Bobby Petrino’s debut and two weeks later hosts bitter rival Louisville, last year’s Big East champion. The Southeastern Conference slate is even tougher with likely preseason Top 10 teams Alabama and Florida at home and Georgia and South Carolina on the road.

An additional $20,000 -- all the clangas.
Y'all come up with $180,000 and you don't scrape up another $20,000 to get muffin's qb? Time to start bagman orientation classes.

Yeahhhh ... but come on Amigo. You said "Kentucky seems to play toughest every year ..."
Maybe, perhaps, in the preseason of 2013 you had an argument. Maybe, not much of one but maybe.
Tennessee, yeah, they play a tough schedule pretty-much every year.
Now, I ask you, you play Louisville, you cited them right?
SCAR plays Clemson (BCS Bowl winner, Top Ten finish), UF plays FSU (BCS National Champ) ... see where I am going with this?
I'll see your MAC schools and raise you our additional ACC schools like UNC last year, NC State, East Carolina ... and wait for it - even UCF who was a BCS Bowl Winner and finished in the Top Ten last year and we played them at their place.
And it's already been proven in countless threads over and over again. SCAR and Georgia are the two teams from the East who have played the most Western Division champs and national champs from the West Division over the years since the '92 expansion, by far. Not even close.
Kentucky plays a tough schedule, we all do, but Kentucky does not play the toughest, or the second toughest, in the East Brother.
This year SCAR plays A&M at home and at Auburn. Kentucky plays at LSU and Miss State at home. Georgia plays at Arkansas and then Auburn at home. Florida plays at Bama and then LSU at home.
SCAR has OoC at Clemson, and ECU at home. Kentucky has at Louisville. Georgia has Clemson at home and at Ga Tech. Florida is at FSU.
Tennessee doesn't even play the toughest schedule in the East this season IMHO.
Bold denotes consensus preseason Top Ten.
1 - Florida ... @ Bama, LSU, @ FSU
2 - Tennessee ... @ Oklahoma, @ Ole Miss, Bama
3 - SCAR ... A&M, @ Auburn, @ Clemson
4 - Kentucky ... @ LSU, Miss St, @ Louisville
5 - UGA ... Clemson, Auburn, Ga Tech

It is not me saying it amigo, it is the national media. I do not do SoS calculations every year. I am not saying I agree (as I feel the Cards get too much hype) but it is what it is.
2013
UL + WKU (with Petrino) + Miami (MAC) + AL State (finished 8-4)
SEC West = Alabama : Cocks played lame Hogs
I get your Clemson argument, and with the Cards playing in the ACC we will get a better feel for who is better every year between the taterheads and the line beards. But in the past the Cards have gotten the benefit of the doubt in the national computer SoS's.
The bigger issue is the SEC west part of the equation and if you seriously think Arkansas was tougher than Alabama last year you need to put down the crack pipe now.
In short it is a combination of OOC and SEC West opponents as both UK and USC face the same foes in the East.
2012
Louisville (beat Gators in Sugar)
Kent State (MAC, went 8-0 in conference and went to bowl game)
WKU (with Bobby Petrino)
Samford (8-4)
SEC West Arkansas (both got Hogs this year so push except Cocks got @ home and Cats played Hogs in Fayettenam)
2011
Louisville (BE Co champs)
WKU (7-1 in Sun Belt)
C Michigan (MAC school)
JSU (#2 in OVC)
SEC = Ole Miss / USC got Auburn
2010
Louisville
WKU
Akron (MAC)
CSU
SEC = Auburn in BCS MNC year / USC got Alabama #4 in SEC West
2009
Louisville
Miami (MAC)
ULM (Sun Belt)
EKU (OVC)
SEC = Alabama in BCS MNC year / USC got Ole Miss in SEC West
2008
Louisville
NSU (MEAC)
MTSU (Sun Belt)
WKU (Sun Belt)
SEC = Alabama won SEC West / USC got Ole Miss in SEC West
2007
EKU (OVC)
Kent State (MAC)
FAU (Sun Belt)
Louisville
SEC = LSU won BCS MNC / USC got State in SEC West
See the big difference when UK is playing the beast in the SEC west in a given year and Cocks are not. Playing a team winning the MNC in a given year or winning the west is a big boost to SoS over the taterheads anyday.

You're such an idiot. In that case, no 2003 or 2007 National Title for LSU. In 2003, LSU had a loss. In 2007, LSU had two losses. Stop being dumb.
