I'm still reasonably young but two things have made me feel out of touch recently: selfies and reading the line-up for Ultra.
Selfies are silly and narcissistic but they aren't doing too much damage. I generally (let me stress that, generally) find that people who love selfies are people I consider less intelligent. You've got a camera and you're out in the world and the only thing you can think to do is take a picture of your face? I know people w/ Instagram profiles almost entirely of themselves. We used to consider that sort of self-promotion and naked striving for acceptance and positive reinforcement shameless.

But what about people like me who have a pretty face?

Selfies are an outward expression of an inward narcissistic disease. The Black Death killed what a 1/3 of Europe? The actual killer was invisible but the symptoms were visible to others. Therefore that actual picture is merely the visual clue to the death of the person taking it.
Civilization - the broad form of human existence - and civility - the act of treating another's person over yourself - are both based in the concept of group interaction and common good by action to the world around you.
View what 2 pictures taken in the same place represent
#1 A picture of the pyramids in Egypt
#2 A selfie taken while at the pyramids of egypt.
Hence the selfie may not be the end of civilization in fact but it can indicate the disease of self in the person taking it.
