They mishandled it from day one, but it was also clear early on that they were significantly outclassed by the likes of Cochran, Bailey, and Shapiro and did a poor job of keeping focus on the evidence.

Case in point -- I read something recently where the prosecution wasn't going to have him try on the gloves, but Bailey kept goaded Darden into it on approach, calling him a coward. Darden's temper and ego got the best of him, and the rest is history.
