I'm not trying to be tin foil hat guy, but I'm a big aviation enthusiast and pilot. Sometimes I sit outside of airports in random cities. Within the last fifteen years (given, after 9/11) we've gone from having barbed wire on top of airport fences facing outwards to keep people out to having V shaped barbed wire things that can theoretically keep people in and out at most airports.

ETA: I never noticed it until I was comparing pictures I took at McCarran Airport back in high school versus today.

Additional ETA: They also reinforced the fences with anchored cables to keep vehicles from running the fence, which doesn't make a whole ton of sense either. Besides a vehicle running the fence and going on to the runway after going through the huge drainage ditches near runways, what's the big issue? Running the fence with a Ryder truck and winding up next to the terminal to bomb it?

Just a guess, and it really is just a guess. But my guess is the "keep 'em in" part of the V is to stop terrorists and dingbats from escaping. Makes sense, anyway.

I didn't really understand this part. Yeah drainage ditches might stop many vehicles... unless they don't. (If I were a terrorist and had scoped out an airport and noticed drainage ditches, I'd visit the site early and lay down a fiberglass bridge that could sustain my vehicle weight. And nobody would notice, because nobody as far as I know monitors this sort of thing. And because I'm devious.) But surely not all airport layouts are identical? (My guess is HS has specified minimum security measures that aren't negotiable.) Again, I don't know. But more to the point, what would be the point of cables for keeping people in? Surely if they're detainees they wouldn't be allowed access to vehicles, right?

It sounds like you're theorizing airports being used as detainee camps. I pictured something with quite a bit more subterfuge. Imagine the outcry if this happened, even after another 9/11. That ain't happening.
