Does your hometown suck as bad as you thought it did growing up?

I'm from a town in SEMO with a population of 3k. It's pretty bad.

I'm actually contemplating moving back to my hometown. It would only add about 10 minutes to my work commute and property is pretty cheap there compared to where I live now.
Will not move back to my old neighborhood though, that place is a war zone. It was bad when I lived there, it's worse now.

Sounds like Anderson County?
My grandparents viewed homes this way
Phase I - single floor, small, convenient to work
Phase II - 2 story (more house for the dollar) close to kids school
Phase III - ranch style (no stairs) close to doctors and grocery store

I think most rural small towns have only gotten worse. I remember when I was a kid that there were actually well-educated and smart families all over where I grew up. It seems like gradually most of those types of people have moved away to larger cities. And of course, meth happened.

I like my hometown, always have. Don't think I could live there though. I've gotten used to "big city" living, though I don't really consider Birmingham a big city.

Mine is better because it's grown a lot. Still not a place I want to go back to, but it's better.

Before I moved away after high school it was alright, still kinda small town but had plenty enough to do for high school kids.
Now I can't imagine living there. The last 10 years has seen the demographics shift quite a bit, as well as a massive influx of people and buildings, to where it's not really a place I find desirable at all.

I think mine has gotten worse with all the growth, but I still love it.

Watching Austin morph into some Portland/Dallas hybrid makes me sad and I've never even lived there. I remember when Frost bank "transformed" the skyline.

More or less yeah. I enjoy the lack of traffic though. It's not so bad if you are only there for a couple of days.

When I was growing up, Applebees was pretty much the best restaurant in town unless you wanted to drive to Montgomery. There really wasn't much for kids to do in town. We finally got a bowling alley when I was in high school. Now, there's not many reasons to go to Montgomery unless you're looking for a good bar or a concert.

I was born in Seoul, I'd say it's gotten a bit better.

I have softened on my feelings towards my hometown. I will probably never move back, but I can see that it is a good place to raise a family. It is just too far from what I consider a major city, even in terms of a major city in Alabama.

Actually the opposite side of Lexington, Montgomery County.
From where I live now, I have about a 20 minute commute to work. From the edge of Montgomery/Clark, it would be about 30. All interstate. Not sure I'm going to do that though, just thinking about it.
