Same can be said for bama.
Absolutely. Never said it wasn't. But this myth that Auburn fans promote that the fan base is made up of only "real" fans that went to school there is just that, a myth. I did the math on a similar topic, something like 20% of the AU fan base went to Auburn and that was a GENEROUS number. I can't get the numbers for Bama because they do not list the total number of living alumni.

More than likely less alumni then Auburn, and just basing that on AU having a larger student body for about 30 years

It's absolutely not a myth that we have a smaller bandwagon than schools of comparable prominence. We're smaller in both alumni base and fan base than most of our competitors, in some instances much smaller.
You can't account for "connections" to a school for obvious reasons. But, I estimate that the number of AU fans who didn't go to school at Auburn are far more likely to have lived in/near Auburn, have a family member or close friend who went to Auburn, etc. than Alabama fans.
Alabama simply has a much larger footprint. It is extremely rare that I meet an Auburn fan who simply woke up and watched AU on TV and decided to pull for Auburn. I meet Alabama and Georgia fans of that nature all the time.
It feeds on itself. You have more people and your reach is broader. There is a lot more exposure traditionally to Alabama than Auburn. Maybe that is changing, but traditionally Auburn is a much tighter knit school than Alabama, UGA, etc.

I know a ton of Auburn fans from growing up in Alabama but I only know a few that attended Auburn. One of those was best friend and he remained a die hard Bama fan during and after graduation.
And UGA is getting pass in here for some reason. There is no way that all of those pickup truck owners with G tags and houses with painted bulldog statuettes ever attended there.
