There's so much mythology around that game. But the fact is that Wilbur Jackson was already a scholarship member of the football team.

You're right, Jackson was on the freshman team in '70, not to mention the walk-ons before him in the late 60's. But even though he was with the team, he didn't get on the field with the varsity till the following year, along with JUCO transfer John Mitchell. I think the USC game helped Bear in getting Jackson & Mitchell on the field sooner, and with much less outcry, than would've been otherwise...

Guys, both things can be true to a certain point.

Yes we were already imtergrated because we had a couple of players signed, but still no black players had played and maybe Bear wanted us to play a team with black players at home to gauge the actions of the crowds vs opposing players.

So both things might very well be true, even though I agree the media does go overboard with the romanticized version of events.
