Oline Recruiting Discussion

I have been reading several blogs about the Dawgs Oline recruiting, and the MELT has begun. In the last couple of weeks 4 of the top Georgia Olinemen commit outside the state. I don't see any reason for concern because the next 3 years we will have Kendall Baker, Devondre Seymour, Dyshon Sims, Isaiah Wynn, and Jake Edwards on the roster. The 2015 recruiting cycle is still very young and anything may happen. I'm not liking that Odoga fled the borders but as for the other 3.....I wish them the best except when the play the good guys. Between last year's Oline recruiting and this year's potential the Coaches will continue its high productive Offense. There are other recruiting storylines that may be worth discussing later but because of the last week of recruiting I just got sick of people talk down on the coaches. Because of the talent we have now the Offense will be lights out for at least 3 more years. Just can't repeat last year's bad luck with injuries.
For those who thought Kendall Baker would be playing on the Dline, this was a headline on a recruiting site...."To prepare for a switch to O-Line, #UGA signee Kendall Baker has been working with a former OT star in the NFL." And he is a BIG boy
???Thoughts???

The meltdown is about 50% legitimate concern about the current OL (more of a development issue imo) and 50% hysterical tendencies among many of our fans.
We basically recruit OL as well as any of our peers outside of Alabama. Ideally we would recruit OL better, but OL recruiting is basically a crapshoot after the top 2-3 elite guys. The guys we're signing were recruited by all of our peers.
Of the 120 FBS programs, 110-115 of them would have traded their 2014 OL class for ours.
In 2015 recruiting, only Edoga really hurts so far. Kim and Sharp are good prospects, but by no means are they sure things relative to other prospects still out there. Hyatt was never going anywhere but Clemson.

I'm impatient, I just wish people just stfu and let it play out. Linemen don't mature until they arrive on campus and adapt to the system. Dawgs gonna be lights out with the linemen and athletes we have now for the next 3 years.

When the top 4 O.line man in the state go else where, there is cause for concern in my opinion.

Only Edoga and Hyatt was tops.

I prefer anger first, rationality later...or never.

Yep, just like people talked shite about us not signing the top rb in the state in 2012 but ended up getting the best rb in the entire country. Just and example.

But Marshall was ranked higher than Gurly

Regardless where the ol comes from, it has always been a weak spot for Richt, atleast here recently.
It's been a while since we have had a stud lineman. Was hoping Theus would be that.

I think of Burnette, Lee, and Andrews as studs.
Burnette and Lee gone, of course.
I think we've had some stud linemen, we've just never had 5 at the same time.
Recruiting has alot to do with it in my opinion.
What if Tunsil (just one example) came to UGA, and was in the mix for a starting position this year, along with who we've already got competing for positions...
Would our offensive line be better or worse in 2014?
I typed up a whole Line Of Scrimmage recruiting thing a few months ago, comparing UGA to Bama, over the last 6 years or so.
As a % of total recruits signed, Bama signs more Line of Scrimmage players than UGA. The average star rating, based on 247, Bama also won. The margin was small, but an extra player here, and extra star there, over the course of several classes, you are going to field a better offensive line.
Bama is signing More and Better linemen, offensive and defensive.
Is it any wonder they "reload" every year instead of rebuilding?
I think the S&C for the lineman hasn't been top notch either, I question Will Friend's abilities to teach fundamentals, and by proxy, Bobo. But that is all just observation over the years and not based on anything specific.

A big part of this is that Bama has signed more players in general. That allows them to use a higher proportion of their scholarship on the offensive line without leaving other positions short-handed. Our OL roster spots are basically the same as all of our peers, but a few of our guys likely would have been processed at other places, allowing for more to be signed.
Their star ratings are just higher than everyone across the board.

So we can't have an O-line as good as Bama's because we don't cheat?

Wrong.
I calculated it as a percentage of total players signed. Whether they signed 15 or 45 in a class, the numbers I put together were as a percentage of players taken.

It's not really cheating. We can have as good an O-Line, it's just less likely. We would have to hit on a higher percentage of our signees than they do.
They're having OL problems right now, too. OL recruit evaluation is a pretty inexact science.

If you are signing more players, you can use a greater percentage of your spots on one position that may have a higher bust rate. Since OL is hard to evaluate, you would use more spots on the OL to increase your odds.
Basically, you change your percentages as your totals change.
