What you linked was talking about hurting the people you're "helping" by trying to help them. That doesn't apply in this situation.

They aren't really putting their kids at risk (although they are kinda screwing the second kid) just themselves. And if they're willing to take that risk then why is that a bad thing?

But to them it is worth it. I am not religious, but they are fulfilling what they see as their duty to god (I guess they are, I don't know the family). Perhaps it is worth it to them. They have been inspired to do something beyond themselves, to help a greater cause. Everyone in the world wants to be inspired by something. How do you know they didn't give the high school daughter the option to live with an aunt or something to finish up in America. Maybe the daughter thinks going on this journey with her parents will bring them closer.

No, it includes "martyrdom", etc...

You guys are kind of horrible. Just because you can't see yourself doing something doesn't mean you have to hold that against others. They believe they have found a calling and they are following it to help those in need. As for your who feel like some are "incompetent" have you been raised in a war torn country where change is hard to make? You are blessed to be born in the USA and I found it snobby and low you would hold that whole country as dumb because there are few with power who are evil.

I'm just attributing it to God, you know, like others attribute this choice to attention whore a "calling", etc.

They are still trying to make a change. Seems more like underlying resentment. I wouldn't go out to Africa like that but why react negatively when people try to do better?

Well, they're basically screwing their youngest child out of a normal life so they can show the world how much they love Jee-sus (sic. Assuming they're Southern Baptist).

Don't remember the exact passage, but that sort of showing off was frowned upon in the bible.

With the poor people of this earth,
I want to share my lot.
The little streams of the mountains
Please me more than the sea.

The "negative reaction" seems cynical, I know. I just question their motives and their judgment, mainly because I am familiar with this "type". Don't worry, they won't let haters like us stand in the way of their "calling". They'll overcome incredible odds to put themselves in harm's way. Maybe they can write a book about it when they're done.

No showing out and asking God for forgiveness like your a tv show in front of everyone was what was frowned upon. Attempting to help others so you could get a pat on the back also was. But how do you know where their hearts are? What gives you the right to judge them? I am quite sure the people in the Bible showing out for recognition weren't giving away all their wealth.

Sometimes people with extraordinary lives make big changes. She could easily be at peace with this and go on to do great things. Your looking at this from the selfish viewpoint we all share.

Although I think they are likely doing it for other reasons than "attention whoring" as there are a lot easier and less permanent ways to attention whore.

But regardless even if it is purely for attention they will still be helping those less fortunate. I am failing to see the problems.

I married into a family of them. Even my wife, who has been on many trips to the Peruvian jungles, thinks this is self serving.

I've got cousins that go to Jordan every other year for 7-8 months. They come back though and don't make a big arrogant production of it.

First of all excuse me being close minded that was rude to assume all of that. Second I understand your view I just think helping people is good even with what can be called "attention-whoring"

As for the volunteers in your family.
