Any country regardless of economic position would have done well if they had had what we did to start out.

Great location (ports in both major oceans, centered in the North American continent)
Technology boom (that had nothing to do with the economy)
Massive military (due to virtually unending resources)
An economy built around what we value.

For what it's worth, China with their mixed economy is doing pretty well as is Japan and South Korea -- all because of technology.

Control technology, control the world. The economics behind it has zero to do with it.
