Yup.
1988 should go to LSU.
1989 should go to UT.

Late 80s had multiple SEC title winners.
1988 Auburn, LSU
1989 Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee
1981 had Bama and UGA as well
1984 has no SEC champ because UF vacated in '85

Do you remember football before 1992?
Everyone knows that none of us really started following LSU until 2000

Just curious as to your reasoning. Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee were 6-1 and 1-1 against each other in 1989. Why "should" it go to UT?
In 1981 Alabama and UGA were both 6-0 and didn't play each other. Why "should" it go to UGA?

Using today's tie breaker rules, the ones listed had better overall records.

I don't think there's any need to pick one out any group of co-champs, but if you had to pick one, I'd go with Auburn and Bama, the Sugar Bowl reps.

LSU beat AU head to head.

1989 was a true three-way tie, though.

I'll buy that now that you changed your pick for 1988 from Auburn to LSU.
The truth is that they "should" be shared championships as they are. I don't see why you would try to apply non-existant rules after the fact.

UT had the better overall record.
That is what they would do today.

We still have the trophy.

Damn, that's pretty good over 3 decades.

How do you figure? At the end of the regular season in 1989:
Alabama 10-1
Tennessee 10-1
Auburn 9-2
Using today's tie breaker rules, Auburn would be removed and Alabama would win due to the head to head with Tennessee.
In 1981 using that criteria, yes, UGA would win as their overall record before the bowls was 9-1; Alabama was 8-1-1.

Crazy that after we win it again this year we will be tied for the most over a 35 year period.

I agree. Till 92 the conference always simply went with best SEC record. In 88 LSU won the H2H but AU was considered the same champion as LSU, just like the B1G, PCC/Pac8/10/12, and the SWC.
