In the olden days, more powerful men would wear ties as poorer men would resort to bow ties.

Actually the opposite appears to be the case. Bow ties were a symbol of affluence, hence black tie is more formal than suit. My theory is ties evolved to cover plain buttons. If you wore a bow tie you wore expensive studs made of gems and precious metals.

look at this expensive cufflink and stud set. The studs would be hidden under a tie, but exposed when wearing a bow tie.

I have worn a bowtie, and I tied it myself. I have not worn a bow tie in 6 years. If I was heading to the KY Derby or some other preppy southern event like a big Nola wedding. I prefer paisley pattern ties.

Gotta do a self tie. Just watch YouTube videos. That's how I learned. It's actually really simple. Almost like trying shoes.

Bow ties are the obvious exception.

I eagerly await your dissertation on how bow ties and neck ties are inextricably connected and there can not be a differentiation made between them to try to show I was wrong for saying people that don't tie their ties with full Windsor knots are scumbags because people that wear bow ties don't tie their bow ties with full windsor knots and there are a number of people that have worn bow ties that were obviously not scumbags.

Please be sure to provide references.
