I need the GSB's advice on my college decision

I'm down between Mercer and UGA as my college destination for this fall, and I can't make up my mind on which one I want to attend. I really love both campuses even though they are on opposite ends of the spectrum, with Mercer being pretty small and quiet, and Athens being bigger and more lively. I figure that a lot of people here have attended or attend UGA, so I'd like to hear some of the pros and cons of being a student in Athens. I'm guessing that there might be a few people here who have gone to Mercer so if anybody has I'd love to hear about your experience in Macon. Thanks in advance for your help!

Unless there's something specific you want to study at Mercer that you can't study at UGA, then definitely go to UGA. At one school you're in the best college town in the country. At the other you're in Macon. It's not a hard choice.
But either way, congrats. They're both great in-state schools and you've done well to present yourself with options.

As hata said, unless Mercer offers something UGA doesn't then it should be a no brainer. Granted, that's me, and I hate small schools.

Another pro about UGA is that it's cheaper, I have a 20k scholarship to Mercer and I'm still looking at paying about 30k a year. I was up in Athens yesterday and I was surprised/happy to learn that the class sizes are smaller than what I previously thought.

UGA and it's not even close.

Go with the cheaper option IMO.

you got it backwards chief. YOu need to figure out the pros and cons (which there will be plenty) of going to mercer. Most likely the pros of mercer won't outweigh even the cons of athens.
Isn't mercer some sort of smart type of school? Unless you're gonna be a doctor or something, go to uga.

I would have gone to UGA had I got in. Visited Athens once and loved the city. If it is cheaper you're getting a great deal on an awesome expirence. Congrats

In that case how is this even a decision?

Just wandering. What are you majoring in?

I agree with everything else that's been said. As you alluded to, the class size thing isn't as big of a deal as many think. I came from a small high school (100 person senior class) but at UGA I really only had maybe 7 or 8 huge classes with 300 people. The vast majority were in the 20s and 30s in number.
Go to UGA.
Go to UGA.

Go where you think you would be most comfortable. UGA is great and has a bit of everything, but if you don't like big classes and a lot of people Mercer would be better.

It all depends on your major. You can use sources like USNews and various other ones you google, to find out how a degree from one school stacks up from a degree from another school. Mercer is a great small private school, but I don't know if the major you are thinking of is any better than the degree you would get from UGA.
Also it will matter if you are going into debt to go into one school or the other.
Student life, having fun etc... are really important when you are a student, but what you get out of your degree and your financial abilities the 50 years after that are really a great priority to have. Besides, you can have fun anywhere if you put your mind to it. I visited friends at this shithole called clem5on a few times and I still had a blast. Drinking and banging girls can be accomplished anywhere as long as you have the initiative and aren't fugly.

Well I will say if you go the bio route at UGA it will be harder and most upper levels are still huge classes unless you pick a more specific major like genetics or cell bio or something. Also I swear my friends at mercer were making better grades with less work because Uga really tries to weed out med students and they make classes harder than they mean to be. But I got in professional school coming from Uga as did all my friends who seriously applied themselves so its not impossible. If you are paying the 30k/year in loans that you will be paying back, don't even consider mercer.
As far as social scene and town it's a no brainer which is better if you're outgoing

My parents said the same thing. Then I froze my dick off for a year and learned better.
Don't make the same mistake I did.

I'm going to say UGA. It's a great school and you absolutely won't regret your time there. UGA is essentially a feeder to Medical College of Georgia if you're really wanting to go in to medicine.
