To be fair to Bama, their 1937 team probably deserved the AP trophy. They lost to California in the Rose Bowl, but Cal was a pretty good team.
Pitt didn't even play in a bowl game, and they had a tie against Fordham, yet they won the AP trophy.
Also, Tennessee deserved the 1938 trophy.
Lot of bias against the South in those days.
(I take most of this back. Cal deserved the 1937 trophy. But Tennessee definitely deserved the 1938 trophy.)
