I don't know enough of the details. If he pulled into a parking lot and caught his "roommate" and his "girlfriend" in a car and he barely hit their car with his and he pushed the gf in the heat of the moment and punched his roommate once, then all of the details published would be correct but not nearly as bad as-
He chased them for block after block and rammed their car at 20 mph. He went after his gf, hurting her multiple times and then beat the hell out of his roommate.
I will tell you if I find out what kind of situation it was.

Yeah I don't either from what's been published. As the news reports have settled down a little (and given how sensationalized the news is) I can tell I can tell he followed them in a car, blocked them in, and hit the guy once and pushed the girl down. More than one report says the girl tried to mace him. Weather a car was hit, and by whom hasn't been made clear.
I also don't know if he is a problem in the locker room or has done this before but I can't find anything that say's that.
ASSUMING this is the extent of it, he's not been a problem before he's probably not going to wind up with a felony and I'm not ready to say that he needs to forfeit his future over it. Anger management and a short leash seems more appropriate. But like you said I don't know enough to tell.

My guess (and it's just a guess) is that it's probably somewhere in between.
