Thanks moso. Really good info on Price.

Welp. When a girl came to our basketball coach, said that Dixon had raped her and coach believed her and gave a couple games suspension was a pretty big failure, IMO.

Are you comfortable with the number of rapes allegedly committed by our athletes over the past 5 years? I don't think it's asking too much to ask for a change there.
Incidents like this one with Price aren't the end of the world. I agree with that idea. But it seems there's a lot of dysfunction with the basketball team. That's as bothersome as the actual alleged offenses.

Are you referring to his freshman season incident? That coach was not at Mizzou when the information became public that a girl had gone to him. If that coach had been at Mizzou, I believe there would have been an investigation and possible discipline. The current coach, when faced with a similar situation, kicked him off the team. You may recall that left us with only one ball handler and the team regressed because of it. I apologize if I misunderstood your point.

Nice to see the evolution of our internet discussion. Do you still beat your wife? I just want to say now, I am looking forward to the first Hitler mention.
Anyway to answer your question, I wish there were zero sexual assaults at MU whether by an athlete or a regular student. Serious question though, is there an epidemic of athletes raping people at MU that is severely worse than other schools or the general population ratios? Are there some numbers that I can see that you are referring to? Less serious thought - maybe you should follow the Mighty Ducks instead because your Disney view of how the world should be is going to frustrate you in college athletics.

Take a deep breath and chill, y'all.

I am curious what you were thinking just a few years ago when we had players getting accused of rape, getting DUIs, getting shot in the ankle during fights, pulling shotguns on people, etc?

You brought it up. Not me. And I wasn't trying to make a "have you stopped beating your wife" argument. While 0 is the acceptable rate of sexual assaults committed by players (as you tentatively agreed), it is not the practical expectation. I was curious (and as evidenced by your last response, with good reason) as to what your comfort level was.

Here's a list of known rape accusations in D1 College football.
LIST
Since 1990, there have been over 60. That doesn't sound like a horribly high number given the number of athletes playing football at a D1 level. A little less impressively, the University of Missouri football teams owns 4 of those rape accusations, two in the 1990s and two in 2010. So, it doesn't appear at a glance that college athletes are raping women at a higher rate than non-athletes. It does appear that Missouri has had an inordinate number of those incidents compared to the rest of college football teams.
quote:The fact that Anderson was the coach doesn't mean it didn't happen at Mizzou. The hope that Frank Haith would have done differently/better than Anderson in responding to the incident is only a hope. There's no reason to suggest he actually would have. I suspect (and this isn't a hope, just a jaded opinion) that if Dixon's first rape accusation hadn't been leaked, that Michael would've played the rest of the year.

Finally, I don't think I have a Disney view of the world. I do have very high expectations of my alma mater and its attitude towards incidents which will literally destroy the lives of innocent young women. And that attitude carries over into other areas which involve the law and policies and procedures. I don't think that's unrealistic nor the result of some discount management book.

Not to jump into the middle of this whole thing, but I don't see the number of incidents at Mizzou as a problem. In fact, I'd think it was a success. It makes me wonder if there is a culture and environment at Mizzou where those who are raped feel more comfortable reporting it or if there is an issue with rapes in the program. Remember, a small percentage of rapes actually get reported under normal circumstances.
Let's not do what everyone else does in another subject and say that Missouri is terrible because the state busts more meth labs than any other, but instead ask why other states are busting so few and be glad Missouri is able to address the issue instead of ignoring it for the sake of less embarrassing statistics.
Zero is the absolute best number, but if it's zero because it's not reported when it happens, that's worse than having 100.
It's about ratios. If Mizzou has a 1:1 Action to Rape ratio, I'm extremely happy with that. While it should always be addressed and prevented by any means, if you get the opportunity to punish the perpetrator every time it happens, that's the best prevention.
Did I ramble? I'm having drinks and am probably an a-hole.

It's a valid point. With so few getting reported as a percentage, it wouldn't take but a couple of instances to make it appear to be a huge problem. So, statistically, the difference is potentially small with a huge difference in results expressed as a percentage.
I'm probably still bitter about Dixon's first rape accusation and what I felt was an absolutely unacceptable response by a coach. In reality, the rest of the responses have been pretty good (outside of crazy Larry's reinstatement of a cat in the late 90s).
Secondly, I probably bristle a bit too much when I feel people are making excuses for what is just shitty behavior. And when we start saying "Did he just bump their car or ram it at 20 mph? Did the girl get accidentally shoved to the ground as he attacked his teammate, or did he whale on her?" I'm pretty much done.

I understand. Waiting for facts can hamper the jumping to conclusion stage. It happens to a lot of internet posters. FYI, I like you as a poster and you are a good addition to the rant.

Ross got restraining order before second assault occurred
Change anyone's feelings? Ross gives some additional details, though not a ton. The fact that Ross tried to handle it the appropriate way just tells me Price was out of control. It wasn't a heat of the moment thing. He could have had a rational head on his shoulders like Ross appears to have had. Frick Price. If he stays, he stays. If he goes, he goes. Frick him as far as I'm concerned.

No excuses for Price. I just wonder what Ross did to cause his best friend to violently turn against him?

Good for Haith. Don't need that cancer on the team.

I think it probably hurts the program but Haith knew what we don't. Price had to go.
