Was 2012 Arkansas primed for a legitimate national championship run?

If Petrino was retained, I'd say yes. They finished #5 in the final AP poll. QB Tyler Wilson was coming back for his final year and RB Knile Davis was coming back after missing the 2011 season. And most importantly, Arkansas was getting Alabama and LSU at home.

Even with Petrino they don't stop Manziel or Saban. They don't finish higher than 3rd in the division, imo.

I still firmly believe that Petrino is a way better game day coach than Saban. With equal talent Saban doesn't stand a chance.

No. Knile Davis still would have played like a pussy and Cobi Hamikton wouldn't have been enough to offset losing 3 receivers to the NFL. And the o line would have continued it's Suckage giving Wilson 5 more concussions. 8-9 wins tops for that team.

Did they acquire a defense that we weren't otherwise aware of?

So you're saying Petrino would have put up 53 on Bama? Nice..

Petrino works wonders (12-1 and 11-1 at Louisville) so he could have been the equalizer. Plus it was Petrino's 5th year at Arkansas and they had talented enough roster.

Arky would have been better, but wouldn't have made it to BCS Championship Game. Defense wouldn't have been any better with Petrino.

Nah...would have made a bowl though.

YES! They would've won it all, guaranteed.
(Only saying so Arkies will have nightmares about "what if")

They had Wilson,Hamilton, and a solid DLINE but that was it.They had a terrible back seven on defense and couldn't protect Wilson on the offense.Petrino wasn't gonna be able to fix those issues.I don't think they would've won more than eight games.

I said 8-4 before Petrino was fired and I definitely think that would have definitely been attainable even after we learned how bad our WR corp actually was outside of Hamilton.
We would have beat Jacksonville State, ULM, Auburn, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Tulsa, Mississippi State and then just needed to squeeze one out between A&M, South Carolina and LSU. Considering how Petrino owned South Carolina, they would have been my guess for the 8th win.

Shitty recruiter (hence Arky was called 5.7 3* U) but he turns shitty recruiting classes into solid football teams. Both Louisville and Arkansas went to the BCS bowl under Petrino.
