I'm interviewing Wednesday for a banking job that could be located in either one of these places. Pros and cons to each?

could tell you a great deal about both but hard to tell you which is which without knowing you better. Addison is a much better place for a younger person imo. The Woodlands is more a suburbanite type area. It's a really nice but more for the married with kids crowd.

I don't know about Addison but I can give you my pros and cons for The Woodlands.
Pros:
- Beautiful area
- Great golf
- Close proximity to Houston
Cons:
- Relatively expensive place to live as far as Texas goes
- People are sometimes snobby because it is such a rich area in general
- Not a ton of activities to do around town(with Houston so close this isn't a huge deal)

I know The Woodlands well.
It's a suburb of Houston but almost becoming its own city. It's probably at about 120,000 and there are several large companies headquartered there (Anadarko, Chicago Bridge and Iron, Exxon is building a massive office complex just south of there right now).
Pros: the schools are very good. There's quite a bit to do for a city suburb because of how it was designed, there's a little bar area that's pretty fun on the waterway and plenty of shopping at Market Street and the Woodlands Mall. There's also the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion which is the primary outdoor concert venue in Houston. It's gets almost every big name act making a Houston tour stop and is located right next to lots of restaurants and bars. The Houston city center is also only 30 mins- an hour away depending on traffic if you want big city stuff.
Cons: real estate prices are always relative, but by Houston suburb standards they are pretty high in The Woodlands. The real estate market there is on fire right now because of the Exxon offices and houses are being snatched up in a couple days. The Woodlands is also a master planned community so everything has kind of a forced feel to it. There isn't much character or history.
Overall it's a fantastic place to raise a family though. There are some very wealthy people but I never felt like it had the snottiness of some of the old money neighborhoods like River Oaks or Memorial. Because it's home to a ton of O&G companies it's also crawling with Ags
we are literally everywhere in that town and it was designed and created by one of our former students. Not sure if you see that as a positive or negative
Good luck with the job
I'm sure one of the DFW posters can tell you about Addison

Thanks for the info guys. The biggest pro and con for the woodlands seems to be the real estate. Pro bc the job I'm applying for is working directly with a crew of mortgage originators but a con bc it appears my salary might not be sufficient for living expenses if it's as expensive as I'm imagining.
@tmc94 is like to hear what you have to say about Addison. It seems like the better fit for me atm.
Eta: it doesn't really matter which one I like better though bc it's not up to me where the job will be

if you get a job in Addison I would live in Dallas and commute on the tollway.
Addison is... I dunno but I just don't like the vibe in that area. Maybe I've just been to the wrong places but it feels very bro-tastic to me.
I much prefer Lower Greenville and Deep Ellum for both partying and living.

There are some outlying areas that are cheaper and not necessarily bad places to live. The quality of the schools could go down drastically though depending on the area, not sure if that's a concern

I'm 24 and single. I'm not worried about schools yet

Living in downtown Houston is probably too far unfortunately. You could do it but the commute would suck pretty hard. If you can afford one of the apartments in The Woodlands right down by Waterway Avenue, Lake Robbins or Six Pines it could be pretty fun.

I commute about 45 mins to and from work now. How far is Houston?
Posted on 3/23/14 at 1:09 pm to UMRealist
Midtown is like 30 miles straight down I-45. The traffic can be pretty terrible. It would be anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour each way
Posted on 3/23/14 at 1:15 pm to ShaneTheLegLechler
Yeah I figured. I'd like to avoid something like that if possible. It sucks

Had a friend that had an apartment that you could see the screens at the pavilion and hear the music. Free Concerts if you didn't want to buy the expensive tickets and be around possibly shitty people.

based on this, and my stereotype of Ole Miss students, and the fact that you are in banking - the Addison option is a no-brainer choice imo if it's totally up to you
Addison profile is mostly 20 something professionals. There aren't any dive bars and so as RC rightly points out, it's not as comfortable a scene as Deep Ellum or Greenville/Knox/Henderson. But if you normally hang out in oxfords and khakis like I assume
Addison is really pretty central too. You can live a lot of different places and work there. I'd probably suggest the Village area (Greenville and Lovers) and that's about a 15-20 min commute but it's relatively cheap and near a ton of good bars.
And rather importantly for long-term aspirations, DFW has a lot more mortgage opportunities. BOA, Chase, Citi, Comerica and CapOne all have major hubs (Chase, Citi, and BOA all have their mortgage div hq in the area). Houston doesn't have the same sort of opps really (in banking, other industries are diff obviously).

Addison is for you then. You're about 20 minutes from downtown Dallas/Deep Ellum

I grew up in Conroe for about 7-8 years as a kid and its unbelievable how from 1987 to now how the Woodlands blew up. It originated as a upper middle-class subdivision, off I-35 surrounded by miles and miles of woods to now it's basically it's own lite city. Just amazing. Lake Conroe is virtually the same as well, damn.
Oh, and realist-- it's ALL aggie country out there too
Horn fans are sprinkled in, but it's like a 50-1 ratio
