There's only 1 private school in the SEC, so I don't see it happening.

You want to get paid while in college? Quit the football team and get a job.
That's one of the things that always gets overlooked in this argument about paying college athletes. What is the real value their total compensation?
As you mentioned:
1. School/classes
2. Housing
3. Meals
also though....
4. Access to Coaching (How much is it worth to a player to be coached by Saban, Spurrier, Jimbo, etc...a year and the top level Asst Coaches? If they paid for that year long training/coaching on their own, how much would that cost to go to a year long Saban Camp?)
5. Access to Trainers/health care when injured
6. PR and Merchandising services (flyers/billboards, jerseys, shirts, social marketing, webpage with player profile, Alumni/networking functions, etc....)
7. Pro Days hosted/paid for by the school,
8. There are probably even more I'm missing.....

You still can. Put in $1 worth of gas, get a $6 frozen pizza at the store, and you can get a whole month's worth of movies on Netflix for $7.99. Total comes to $14.99!

Exposure/popularity. I know you can't put a price tag on that, and many players might not GAS, but you can't tell me it's not a benefit that every female in the bars knows who you are and knows you play football, and the ones with less than stellar morals would frick you simply based on that fact alone.

Hate them because their states are stronger, they are better educated, make more money, they have better health care, or some other reason?

Would it be nice to have some part of jersey sales or memorabilia sales? Absolutely, But that is not the goal AS OF RIGHT NOW.
"Right now" is going to be gone the second the NLRB recognizes them as a union. Then the Union is going to ask for everything under the moon and seek whatever crumbs the Universities are willing to give them.
The Universities' Admins are going to have to form a coalition themselves just to make sure everyone is on the same page about what they can/should give athletes, b/c if one Univ "ups the ante" and does something on their own like give athletes a 10% bonus for making the honor roll, then all athletes at the different schools may get the same beneift off of the precedent set by someone with a like wage code at another school.

I agree with that. I tore my knee up in college playing football. If I was in the military, I'd be getting a check for the rest of my life.

Northwestern's football players have submitted signed union cards for players wishing to be recognized by the NLRB. Basically they are doing so to try to classify themselves and all college athletes as employees of the university.
That's fine. Conferences and other schools should not schedule them going forward.

You quite easily could have gone to the military instead of playing football. No one forced you to do either, and you knew the risks ahead of time.
Same reason it infuriates me these washed up NFL players are now seeking money due to their heads being fricked up from 15 years in the league. Well, no shite guys.

Exactly. Don't want to play football for a free education? Get a job and pay your own way instead. No football, no blame for injuries.

Kids should totally get the same benefits playing college ball as they should defending the country.

As a former college football player... if you think you are being exploited and enslaved, you are selfish. I wasn't even on scholarship and still had to do all the same shite the scholarship players had to do day in and day out. Now that I have graduated and am having to pay back student debt, I don't think they understand the true value of a free ride, especially to a school like Northwestern.
No one cares you played at a Division 3 school.

No football, no millions of dollars coming in to the universities.
I'm grateful for my degree and my job, but college athletes should be compensated if they're hurt playing sports. If a professor fell down while teaching a class and couldn't teach anymore, the school would let them medically retire.

The answer isn't unions, that will just put northern schools at an even GREATER disadvantage.
The real problem is the NCAA is ruled by FCS schools. Once the re-org and Division 4 happens then players will get a stipend.

So some private that tears his knee up playing beach volleyball and never sees a single minute of combat doesn't get any disability right?

So by that logic you don't buy goods or receive services from union shops?
