Simple fact is that it impacts very few people. The large majority of American sports fans aren't avid NBA fans, and the large majority of NBA fans don't care about Boston/LA.
which is why the 2010 nba finals was the highest watched NBA finals series in years. 28.2 million people watched game 7 in 2010. how many do you think watched the iron bowl this past week>

Considering it has been a couple of decades since this rivalry truly garnered national attention,
2 nba finals in the last 5 years have been between who?

I'm looking at it from a national interest perspective.
auburn/bama is not very high on the national interest perspective. it was this year, but as a whole since college football is a very regional sport, unless its OSU/UM it isnt going to be nationally relevant

Absolutely it's relevant to Bama & Auburn fans--as well it should be.
But I'm not sure why some of em are hellbent to convince everyone else that theirs is the "greatest rivalry in sports."
It's all relative (no pun intended).
Many in-state rivalries exist; and to fans of those schools, those respective rivalries are a big deal.

Out of that 28 million that watched, I bet half weren't avid Celtic or Lakers fans. Station ratings are irrelevant to a rivalry, because who really gives a frick about outsiders in a rivalry? It's between the two of them. I seriously doubt that someone from LA is going to be automatically hostile to someone from Boston. New Yorkers though with Bostonians and vice versa, hell yeah they're going to be hostile when sports are even slightly brought up.
