Is Penn Wagers the most worthless sack of crap employed by the SEC?

Chuck Dowdle mentioned on 680 this morning that, before the coin toss, Wagers put his arms around both captains and said, "Boys, it don't get much better than this."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is Wagers not supposed to be an impartial observer? I get that it's a cool setting, but isn't he supposed to at least give the impression that he is checking his emotions at the door of his job? Instead, he hams it up with the players before the game and then does this with Richt (as observed by Blutarsky):

quote:

Wagers steps into an argument with Richt, which is bad, but then steps back into it after Richt turns away to continue complaining, admittedly in a heated way, to another official. The sense of satisfaction when Wagers throws the flag is almost palpable. It’s also inexcusable. It’s supposed to be the official’s responsibility to calm the waters, not to stir them even more. Well, at least if you’re referring to competent officials, it is.

The other bizarre thing I noticed was the number of times Georgia players tried to lobby Wagers after he’d thrown a flag. You see players asking officials to call penalties routinely, but discussing calls with a referee after they’re made isn’t the usual thing. You tell me what that indicates.

He should have never touched Richt after he turned his back to yell at the other official. He stuck his face back into the argument and then threw the flag.

Reminds me of the Vandy game when the ref had his flag out before Drew hit the QB....

However, I would like to add that Richt should not wait until the end of the season to show his emotions...that obviously was a tipping point after a brutal season, but why not start this intensity in Aug
