Started out a Newton when I was a kid (talkin like 4 or 5 here). Reason? I liked Tigers and the color blue more than I liked Elephants and the color red. lol
My dad was a Bama fan. Around the age of 7 I decided I wanted to cheer with Dad instead of against him.
Then I went to undergrad at Bama and now Grad school. Not at 7, of course.

Family went to AU. I was the only AU fan (and coincidentally only actual sports fan) among brainwashed kids until junior high when plenty of bandwagon, non-sports-watching, dumb gumps jumped ship.

Most of my family consists of Bama fans, and the majority of them are redneck trash. So I guess you could say my family turned me into a "barner". I've never been a crowd follower, so my independent streak played a roll as well. Also, Bo Jackson.

Parents are bama fans, when I saw Bo Jackson I started caring about football. Even before I was an AU fan I didn't care for bama because all my parents friends that watched the games there were annoying and arrogant like it was them who actually won something. Had a best friend who's family was auburn. COMPLETELY different type of fanbase experience.

3 generations of AU graduates ahead of me.. about to make it 4.
I doubt the process of becoming a fan here differs than any other place in the country.

There are hardly ANY Bama or Barn families. Most are split. My parents are AU, my sister and me are Bama. I became a Bama fan in 1973 when I went to the Sugar Bowl against ND. The game was so big. TV always talked about Alabama, Bama was the team, it carried my states namesake. It just made sense. My two grandfathers were Auburn, my two grandmothers were Alabama. I have 26 cousins. 19 of which are Alabama the remainder are Auburn. My father in law is a Bama guy and his sister Auburn. Families very rarely root all one way. Other than what I mentioned I also became a Bama fan because my father was Auburn.

Was Ex Navy vet originally from New Jersey a long long time ago. Married a Mobile Girl from Alabama Family. Before I met them, The only College FB game. I had ever attended, was (whoopee do) Princeton Vs. Brown U....lines HS game compared to Big Boy Football here in The SEC.
My late Father was a Big ND fan.....yea, before he passed away I tried to teach him how it is...sadly he still loved the Golden Domers....Screw Them.....Roll Tide!!

I actually attended the institution of which I am a fan. Something that is somewhat unique to most Auburn fans as compared to other fan bases.

Everyone in my family is an Alabama fan. They're assholes. So I'm an auburn fan.

Since my family is from Knoxville, I grew up a Tennessee fan. Then my sister went to Alabama, so we started to go to Bama games. Almost went to Alabama (applied, got scholarship), but went to Auburn for Architecture instead. Now I'm only an Auburn fan, pulling for Tennessee when they don't play us.
I have a lot of cognitive dissonance to deal with during the Fall.

Well considering that my Dad named me "Bear Bryant Updyke" and my sister "Crimson Tyde", I don't think I had much choice in who I would cheer for.

Most of my family are Bama grads / fans. I have always been an Auburn fan and have always embraced the underdog role. I actually went to AUM ( Auburn University Montgomery ). My wife is from Auburn and graduated from there with 2 Masters and a PhD.
