He probalby does't think about the fan base much or care. He sees the fans as mostly a recruiting tool so that he probably likes, but he also probably dislikes all the potential outside distraction they cause.
Every single fan base has lunatics and they scream loudest on the internet and talk radio.
The extremist fringe, they represent like <1% of the fan base and seem to be the only people you ever hear from.

Surely you admit that bama has a >1% lunatic/fringe base....

For most schools, yes. Alabama, like 10-15%. And another 35% who thinks Harvey Updyke is admirable.
