I worked at Dell, Inc. until 2009. Thought I was destined to Teach HS, made a major career change, and almost immediately regretted it because I was already married, and have since had 2 children. So now, I'm obviously struggling to pay the bills, and am looking at getting back into a field that can better support my family.

Potential Job: I have a family friend who runs a company that specializes in construction and maintenance of electric power transmission and distribution facilities. He has offered me a job and says that the money is good, and I would move up to management very quickly, due to him knowing and trusting me, and knowing my business background/experience at Dell.

Should I talk to him more about this job, and possibly take him up on the offer?

Good point. I don't know anything about this industry, so I'm just poking for personal research means here...

What do you do now? I.e., what would you be giving up to take this opportunity?

That segment of the Infrastructure is in dire need of upgrading so there is a good chance his company will be busy for years to come so yeah its worth exploring

Is the job in Victoria? Do they do O&G electrical work? If so, the money is good and you won't regret it. If not, drive O&G client work and you will make a fricking killing. The getting is good for electrical and construction work in the Eagle Ford and there is a lot of money to be made

i was in the same boat for a while. I had a good (not great) paying job in education for a while, but there just came a point where it was not paying the bills and I had to jump ship. Whole different world out here but I haven't regretted it yet.

If you really dont like your current job, go for the switch. Even if it doesnt work out you could probably find another job fairly quickly with your experience.
