Being totally realistic, who should we target for DC this offseason?

In the scenario (wishing, hoping, praying, whatever) that CTG is either let go or moves on. Don't make yourself look stupid and say Muschamp or something like that, since that is absolutely not going to happen.
What are some bona fide, realistic, plausible guys we could get? And I have no idea ftr, so I'm genuinely asking. I don't know who's out there. It's unlikely a current HC would take a demotion, so I guess we'd go the route of either a current DC looking to make a lateral move or a step up from a smaller school, someone currently unemployed, or someone currently on staff (Wilson essentially).
So who do yall think?

Anyone on Saban's staff. Seems to be working well for FSU as of now.

Aren't Saban assistants typically a bad move, kind of like Bellicheck assistants?

No. I just said the same thing on the SECR, but it wouldn't be the same. He was, at worst, the 2nd best DC we've ever had, but even he himself says that it's a different game today with these offenses. He already came back to the SEC and he failed miserably. Plus hates recruiting.
We can do better.

I think it's unlikely Will Muschamp gets fired, but if he does, I think he's the obvious choice.
I don't like the Wilson idea. He just failed as the DC at MSU.
Maybe try Brent Venables. I don't know how much Clemson wants to pay to keep him.
The Stanford DC would be worth a call. Jeremy Pruitt could be a possibility as well.

Idk if by "saban's staff" yall are implying Kirby, but I doubt that's very realistic. For one, he pretty much dynamited that bridge a few years ago. Plus, how proven is he, really? He's never gone and accomplished anything on his own. Everything good on his resume has been when he's been running Saban's defense on Saban's staff.
He could be awesome, or could suck..who knows.

Why would he go from being a head coach at a top 5-8 job nationally to a DC?

What other choice would he have? He's not likely to get a HC job immediately after getting fired.
He probably wouldn't be here that long, but if you have good assistants, they get hired away.

This is true

I do not know anyone specifically but I would make a data-based decision taking into account the personality of the candidates. Look a defensive stats say over the last 5 for all teams including lesser schools. Interview those proven DC's and make a decision.
Having said that, I actually like Grantham's fiery personality but the guy was never a DC before coming to Georgia and it appears he is still in on the job training transitioning from the pro to the college game.

What about Jim Leavitt?

If he's run out of Gainesville for lack of results, yes. That's often the only option a disgraced HC has. I'm not sold on Wilson as a DC, but I'm impressed as far as his DL coaching goes, to this point. (Not that it took much to improve over 2012, but still...).
Stanford's DC seems like a good option (Derek Mason).

The buyout usually is reduced by the amount of the new salary. (e.g. $3.0M buyout drops to $2.5M when he gets a $500k annual salary as a DC somewhere else). He still makes HC money, but the new job supplements the amount for the rest of the term.
That said, didn't he just get an extension, last year?

I'd first reach out to Jeremy Pruitt to gauge his interest. He is not only a really good defensive coordinator, he is one of the best recruiters in the nation.
If that fails, call me crazy, but I think we should give Kirby another call. This time with the incentive of taking over once Richt retires. He would bring Saban pedigree while locking down the state in recruiting. If it works out we have an easy transition to a new HC, something Florida and Tennessee have struggled with recently.

I could get behind either of those. (Pruitt or Kirby as coach-in-waiting).

Would that then expedite Bobo taking a HC job?

I believe he was the DC at Cleveland at one time.
