This country is going to hell in a hand basket and only those who are responsible care about it.

The GOP has turned into spineless goo, more concerned with being in power than holding to principles. They are going further and further to the left because they think that's what it takes to win.

Why should I vote for a liberal Republican when I know what I've got with a liberal Democrat?

Fail all around.

Because you're still going to choose the liberal Republican anyway. Undecided voters have a greater chance of voting for the more moderate republican than a right winger.

There is also a bunch of dumbasses over there too who have no concept of how the bond markets function. A default on US debt isn't like skipping a payment on your auto loan.

Enter the tea party. I will not vote for a 'McCain' type ever again.

The US can't default unless they ignore the Constitution. I'm not getting into this crap!

But seriously, call me when the revolution starts

I'm a very conservative republican but half of the "tea party" is exactly what is wrong with this country. Radical "old order" conservativism is as irritating as the left wing hillbillys blaming business and the 1% for everyone's problems instead of getting off their asses and working. For those that argue about our country going "bankrupt" needs to take a closer look at the what exactly a debt ceiling is. The whole concept of a "debt ceiling" in nominal terms is fricking stupid and not raising it is just as foolish.

My faith in the government will be restored once we have entitlement reform where it is worse to be on food stamps than to be a minimum wage worker. Until then we will continue to pander to the idealist left with the tea party doing more prodding and annoying the "big brother liberals" than making real progress in legislative means.

So...Mitch McConnell got a $2B deal for a dam in KY as part of this new agreement but the Tea Party is the problem.

Yes, you pointed out a guy looking to help out his state (as well as TN and OH) which he was, partially, elected to congress to do so. I think it's bullshite as well, but acting like Congressmen acting in their district's best interest is the big problem is laughable. This shite is small potatos compared to the bigger picture, but by all means, convince yourself that this is the problem.

In nominal terms...yes. But looking at the nominal amounts like this is not as important as this picture r epresenting spending as a percentage of GDP

As a whole i think the government is the biggest imbroglio of corruption, inefficiency, and power mongering people, so I am all for gutting a lot of the government subsidized programs. But if you want to act like the nominal amount of $17 trillion outstanding debt is the "big picture" problem, then go take an econ class.

No arguments here for this one. Whoever instituted the pension system for government employees needs to be exiled.

Not sure if I agree with you on this. US GDP includes government spending. If you borrow $100k do you count that as income? I know its popular to compare debt to GDP but it doesn't hold up to reason.

Total domestic GDP also has to fund all private debt as well so if you're going to use this as a benchmark you should include private and federal US debt. That puts your percentage close to 700%. Otherwise your comparing apples to oranges.

But debt service is really the issue here. If rates revert back to the mean we will have to borrow to just to pay our interest as our debt rolls over. That's insolvency.

To me this is a pretty big deal.
