We certainly could have used a successful onside kick at the end of the Alabama game...so my answer would be:

It was awesome. I was crying I was laughing so hard when Bertolet did the money gesture.

Hell yeah! Kicker swag yo!

I love that you found that pic. I was also laughing my arse off.

Btw, I'm pretty sure we did it because SMU turned without looking the first two kicks. Well 3 really. IMO you should do that to anyone if their kickoff teams aren't going to even bother to watch the kick.

As a SMU fan so eloquently put it

I think the onside kick was to say, not only do I have superior talent but I'm a better coach than what you've got too

I agree. The weird thing to me is people griping about this in the first quarter. Why?

It was probably an automatic read because SMU's return team was turning their backs. Also gives opponents more shite to practice.

I assumed it was bc SMU was showing their arse literally, I didn't see Bertolet cash out when I was watching the game yesterday, that is amazing

It's a lot like how Jackie would always have our team line up for XP's in the swinging gate formation. If the other team didn't set up over there we just hiked it over and walked in for an easy 2 point conversion, no matter the game or score. We actually did it against Auburn in the Cotton Bowl when we had just scored a TD to go up by 20 with almost no time left.

You do that stuff because it teaches the ST's to be aware and focus on details. Sure, you may get an easy play every so often but it also gives the ST something to focus on and be alert for so they don't just go through the motions. Lazy ST play can lose a game for you.
